New parents to be, Cecil (Justin Cole) and his pregnant wife Hebres (Evon Crighton, must make a crib and build a life inside of an unfamiliar and sterile home. Just as their neighbor and friend, Xerxes (Jie Casey) comes to help them situate into baby life, a life form from the sky starts picking off the neighbors on the block when they leave their home. This traps the trio, with little food, inside their humble abode. Xerxes must leave to take care of his ailing father, to Cecil’s shagrin. This further alienates our couple into fear, isolation, and starvation. Hebres’ heart goes out to a real rebel-rouser Nash (played perfectly by stage actor and strong up and comer
Isaac Stackonis.) He finds himself trapped and injured and lying in street following his pillaging of Xerxes’ house of all their food. Now inside their home, Nash throws safety and stability completely out of whack. The terror outside the home is now no match for the nightmare unfolding inside, where Cecil must make some bold decisions on survival for his family. Let’s just say that the c-section scene, is shocking in its subtlety. Invariably, we are left with the question best summarized by the film’s tagline, “What happened on Sparrow Street?” What happened, indeed!?!
But what truly sets Sparrow Street apart is its ability to make you think. It explores profound themes that linger long after the credits roll—questions about life, love, sacrifice, starvation and the human (or not so human…ahem) condition. It's a thought-provoking masterpiece that will leave you pondering its hidden messages and meanings for days. You may just have to watch the film twice or thrice to unpack all the brilliance.
